MODERN GOALTENDING

MODERN GOALTENDING provides specialized training for goalies to develop their skills, techniques, and mental toughness.

It focuses on essential aspects such as positioning, reflexes, rebound control, and puck tracking through on-ice drills and off-ice workouts. Our experienced coaches are former professional or collegiate goalies who offer personalized instruction to help participants improve their stance, footwork, and reaction time.

We can include video analysis and situational play to enhance game awareness and decision-making under pressure.

TRAINING FOCUS

MODERN GOALTENDING dives into hockey goaltending's latest techniques, strategies, and equipment that have developed over the past decades. It contrasts with older, stand-up styles by emphasizing athleticism, positioning, and efficiency in movement. Key aspects include:

  1. Butterfly Style – Popularized by goaltenders like Patrick Roy, this technique involves dropping to the knees to cover the lower part of the net while using leg pads to block shots. Goalies stay compact and controlled, reducing openings for shooters.

  2. Positional Play – Modern goalies focus on cutting down angles and maintaining proper depth in the crease. Techniques like the reverse-VH (vertical-horizontal) and overlap help improve post-sealing and puck tracking.

  3. Athleticism & Mobility – While size remains an asset, modern goalies emphasize lateral quickness, edgework, and explosive movements, allowing them to react swiftly while staying in control.

  4. Puck-Handling Skills – Many goalies now act as a "third defenseman," improving breakouts and reducing forechecking pressure.
